How Long To Wait Between Adding Pool Chemicals

How Long To Wait Between Adding Pool Chemicals

It’s recommended to wait at least 10 minutes between adding chemicals to your pool. 10 minutes is typically a sufficient amount of time for the chemicals to mix in the water.

How Long Should You Wait Between Adding Pool Chemicals?

The pool needs to be a bacteria and algae-free environment for everyone’s safety. To maintain the pool water, chemicals need to be added regularly. While this could seem like a time-consuming task, it’s actually quite a simple process. You just need to know which chemicals to use, when to apply it, and how long to wait between adding more chemicals.

The wait time should be about 10 minutes between each and every chemical applied. Under normal conditions, you’ll be able to swim in your pool 10 minutes after all chemicals have been added. If you turn your pump on high and slowly pour the chemical mix in front of the return, it should be smooth process altogether. The process will take longer if you choose to turn the pump on low, then add the chemicals.

What Are The Common Pool Chemicals?

Here are the main pool chemicals used today:

  • Algaecides
  • Alkalinity Balancers
  • Alkalinity Increaser
  • Calcium Hardness Increaser
  • Chlorine Stabilizer
  • Cyanuric Acid
  • Hardness Balancers
  • pH Balancers
  • Sanitizers
  • Shock

What To Avoid When Adding Pool Chemicals

Make sure to avoid these situations when adding pool chemicals to your water:

  • Do not add at the same time or mix muriatic acid with chlorine. This interaction will result in a toxic gas that is very dangerous to your health.
  • You must wait at least 24 hours before adding chemicals after you have added Calcium Hypochlorite. This can alter the pH of the water, which can cause some temporary clouding.
  • Chlorinating agents, such as Trichlor and Cal Hypo, should never be mixed together. Even putting them in the same feeder can create an explosion.
  • Refrain from ever mixing pool chemicals with one another.
