Pool Lights Not Working

Pool Lights Not Working

Let’s take a look at the most common reasons why your pool lights may not be working and what you can do to diagnose/fix the issues.

Reasons Why Your Pool Lights Are Not Working

Here are four reasons why pool lights are not working and a few DIY tips to help you fix your lighting.

1. Water Behind The Lens

It’s no secret that water in a lens can cause the light to burn out entirely. Remove the fixture carefully if you suspect this to be this issue. Dry your light fixture and reassemble with a new bulb.

Once you have reassembled the light, tighten the gasket. If small bubbles form, the gasket has not been re-installed tight enough. Reinspect the lens if the light is still not working. Check for any leaks, holes, or warping.

2. Burnt Out Bulb

A broken or burnt-out light bulb is the most common reason why your lighting is not working. If this is the case with your pool lights, all you’ll have to do is switch out the light bulb.

Here is a quick guide to switching out the bulb(s):

  • Shut off the breaker and all power switches to start.
  • Remove the lens and bulb.
  • Replace the bulb with a new one.
  • Turn your light on to test it.
  • Place the bulb underwater to make sure there are no air leaks.
  • Replace the bulb and fixture if everything works properly.

If the issue is still not solved, it could be as simple as a new light bulb that is defective. Switch out the bulb and try another one.

3. Broken Screw Hole

If you have older models of pool lights, the screw hole can break over time and no longer hold the light fixture in place. Simply insert a light wedge to keep the fixture in place.

If the fixture is not being held tightly, water can leak into it and crush the light cord conduit. If the conduit is ultimately damaged, it must be sealed at this time.

4. GFCI Outlet Not Working

If the lens appears to be working properly, it’s time to direct your attention toward the ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet. If you notice the GFCI outlets button is red, this means electricity is not going to the light.

Inspect the breaker, fuse, and any switches that could be associated with the faulty light. Ensure all of these are in the “ON” position.
